During our reading time we have been reviewing letter identification and letter sounds. We also have been working hard on stretching sounds/blending words (for example, c-a-t cat. b-u-g bug.) and building words.
Over the past few days we have been word builders! We take a given word such as am and add, change, or remove letters as necessary. This is what our construction site might sound like: am. Add an h to am. What word did you make? (ham) Change h to j. What word did you make? (jam). Change j to r. What word did you make? (ram). Change m to n. What word did you make? (ran)
This is what our construction site might look like:
am
ham
jam
ram
ran
We practice these skills in a variety of ways. Below you will see our busy builders hard at work on both the white board and the SMARTboard. We take turns building words and after one kiddo builds a word, they ring a bell for the rest of the group to read. Building words helps build our reading foundation!

We love building words at school and you can try it at home too! This week we are working on the -and and -ag word families. Try building words that end in -and or -ag (band, sand, land, bag, rag, tag). Encourage your child to do this at home. You may even choose to use fun materials such as markers or paint to make the activity more engaging! Have fun learning. :)
