At the beginning of January we began math stations in first grade! During math stations, students rotate between five stations where they practice a variety of math skills such as addition, subtraction, story problems, unknown totals and partners, place value, number sense, and number writing. Math stations provide an opportunity for students to review important math skills through a variety of engaging games and activities that the kids seem to love!
Below you will find pictures and more information about our exciting math station time. Math stations take place every Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday from 2:30-3:15. The activities change every week. If you are interested in joining us during math stations, please contact me and we'd love to have you join us!

Last week the learning target at Station 1 was, "I can add or subtract to find unknown totals and partners."
Station 1 is a review station. Students come to this station each week to find a work page to review the current skills being taught during math time earlier in the day. It provides an opportunity for students to get additional practice and for me to know what students need extra help with.
Station 1 is also where I spend most of math station time. Station 1 is differentiated to meet the needs of all learners. This means each group gets a different review page. I am also available to pull small groups or individuals who need extra explanation and practice at this station.
You'll notice below that once students are done, they get to read books!

First graders hard at work!
Last week the learning target at Station 2 was, "I can subtract 1-digit numbers."
At Station 2, students will always practice subtraction at the back carpet. Last week students played with dice-in-dice to practice subtraction! This activity reminded them that when you subtract, the bigger number goes first. They had a blast with these special dice!
Games make learning extra fun!
The learning target at Station 3 was "I can add 1-digit numbers."
At Station 3, students practice addition! This week students took turns picking jumbo dominoes and adding the two parts together. They then compared their dominoes to their partner's to see who had the greater total.
We love learning with our friends!
When finished with their activity, students can play addition war. Who knew addition could be so much fun!?
The learning target at Station 4 was "I can write numbers 1-120." First graders are expected to count and write to 120 by 1s, 2s, 5s, and 10s.
At Station 4, students practice number sense. This includes activities such as number writing, placing numbers in order, comparing numbers by greater than or less than, or finding ten more and ten less.
Students were careful to check if their numbers were written the correct way. Watch out for those naughty backward numbers, first graders!
The learning target at Station 5 was "I can add fluently."
At Station 5, students rotate with a partner between a SMARTboard activity and an iPad activity. This week students played games that gave them extra practice with addition fact fluency. The SMARTboard and iPad games will align with 1st grade math standards each week.
Moms and Dads, if you visit abcya.com, go under grade 1, and find Marble Math, your child can play this game at home!
This iPad app is called "1stGradeMath" and students played Barnyard Math Challenge during math stations. Have you found any math apps that you'd like to tell our class about?
Math stations have become a favorite part of our week! I love watching the students enjoy learning with one another. Math stations provide a perfect opportunity to actively practice math skills through activities that keep us moving and engaged.
Lastly, one of my favorite parts about math stations is having group leaders. Students take turns being a group leader in their math stations group. The leader is responsible for getting material and putting it away. They are also responsible for keeping everyone on task and answering questions if anyone needs help. I love watching the leaders take ownership and positively lead their group. First grade is not only a year of great academic growth, but social growth as well. My hope and goal is to not only help students grow academically, but to also help teach life skills such as positive leadership. I am incredibly proud of their responsibility and positive leadership during math stations and I know you would be proud of them too!
