Today we celebrated our writing with a second publishing party!
Over the past few weeks we have been working on revision in writer's workshop. During writer's workshop, we take one small moment story that was written earlier, reread it, and revise our writing to add detail. The first graders were excited to revise their stories and I am so proud of the writing they are doing every day at school!
Before the kiddos would go to their seats to revise, we would meet as a class to learn a new revision strategy. Once we were introduced to the new revision strategy, the first graders enjoyed watching me use that strategy to revise my own story. Then the kids had a chance to try using this revision strategy on their own! Below you will find several of our learning targets in writing:
*I can use a caret to add detail to my writing
*I can use a line of learning to fix my writing
(Students cross off writing that does not fit in their small moment story)
*I can use a sticky note to add details
*I can add a page to my writing when I have 2 or more sentences to add
*I can add to the heart of my story
*I can zoom-in on the heart of my story
Below you will find our class anchor charts that are hung in our classroom as reminders of how writers can revise or make changes in their writing. You will also find more details about our learning targets.

*I can use a caret to add detail to my writing *I can use a sticky note to add details *I can add a page to my writing when I have 2 or more sentences to add | *I can add to the heart of my story (At the end of our story we like to add our feelings!) *I can add speech bubbles to my pictures (Students are encouraged to add dialogue to both their pictures and words. At this point in first grade, we use speech bubbles in our pictures and will add more dialogue in our writing second semester) |
*I can zoom-in on the heart of my story
(Rather than writing, "I was happy," students were challenged to zoom-in on their feelings. They were encouraged to explain what their face was doing ("I was so happy that I could not stop smiling"), what their legs were doing ("I was so happy that I started jumping up and down"), and/or what their arms were doing ("I clapped my hands because I was so happy")
The first graders quickly understood the importance of revising. We want to revise to help our readers better understand our writing. After weeks of revising, the first graders ended our revision unit with a Publishing Party to celebrate their incredible accomplishments. They are becoming excellent writers!
During our publishing party, we again had the privilege of getting comfy in our socks, reading into our author's microphone, and enjoying a yummy cookie after hearing all of the stories! This time the first graders earned a new privilege. They sat in the rocking chair to read their story! We had many proud publishers in our class and I loved hearing them read and seeing them show their picture after each page. :)

We had a great afternoon of celebrating these special authors. Way to go kiddos! I am so very proud of your stories. Thank you for sharing with our class!
