We have completed all of our first grade math units! It amazes me how quickly the school year goes and wow! These first graders have grown so much in their math skills. I am so proud of their hard work all school year long.
This week we began SECOND GRADE math! :) The first graders have been learning to add two 2-digit numbers together. It has been neat to make connections and recognize why it was so important to learn our first grade math first. When we add two 2-digit numbers it is necessary that students understand place value (which number is in the ones place, tens place) as well as counting on. Below are pictures taken during one of our math lessons this week. It's incredible what these little ones can do!

When we add two 2-digit numbers it is necessary that students understand place value (which number is in the ones place, tens place) as well as counting on. Below are pictures taken during one of our math lessons this week. It's incredible what these little ones can do!
To start, we draw tens sticks and ones dots to represent the 2-digit numbers. Then we take the ones and make a group of ten to make it easier to count. We count the tens and the extra ones to find our total.
After we did our drawing, we put the numbers into a vertical equation (making sure our ones and tens place numbers were lined up perfectly!). We added the ones, brought the extra ten below, and then added the tens.
It's a process, but we're learning! Please take a moment to look at the math pages that are coming home with your child throughout the week. It's a great glimpse into what you can expect for the beginning of second grade.
