Over the past 8 weeks, Mrs. Vysoky (our school social worker) has joined our classroom with her turtle friend, Tuffy. Mrs. Vysoky has been meeting with us to help teach and guide students in social learning activities. They have learned about responding appropriately when angry, dealing with teasing, telling vs. tattling, remembering to stop and think before making choices, and knowing the importance of telling the truth and fixing the problem when bad choices may have been made.
The kids have participated in a variety of group discussions, activities, and role plays to help them
STOP and take time to calm down by counting to 10
THINK about their choices: talk it out, walk away, or ignore
ACT on one or more good choices
This past Wednesday was our last day with Mrs. Vysoky and Tuffy. Mrs. Vysoky read the book "Howard B. Wigglebottom Learns to Listen" to the first graders while they enjoyed a yummy sucker. We reviewed good choices and the skills we have learned over the past eight weeks as well.
Although Mrs. Vysoky and Tuffy will no longer be visiting on Wednesday afternoons, we will continue to practice these Skills For Life in our classroom daily and I encourage you to try it at home too!
Below you will find pictures of the first graders listening to Mrs. Vysoky's last story with us and Tuffy's final wave good-bye until next year when he visits the kids again in 2nd grade.

Good-Bye Tuffy! Thank you for teaching us so many valuable lessons that we can use life-long. We will work hard to STOP THINK and ACT when problems arise. See you in 2nd grade!
