The letter Q and the letter U got married in our first grade classroom today! In phonics, we are learning that qu says "kw". We also have been discovering that q is always followed by u in words. Today we spent the morning collecting words with qu that were scattered around our classroom. These qu words were "given" to the letter Q and the letter U as a wedding gift. Below you will see Melanie placing the last word on the whiteboard. Stretching words with qu is easy-peasy now that we know qu says "kw".
After we put the gift together and practiced reading more words with qu, the wedding began! Sticks were pulled to decide who would be the flower girl (thank you Kameron for helping throw flowers down the aisle!), the letter Q bride, and the letter U groom. All the girls were Q's and all the boys were U's today! The purpose of the wedding was to emphasize that u always follows q in words, and that together qu says "kw".
After the wedding, we celebrated at the reception. We danced to a song about Q and U and enjoyed a small treat! First graders can read the sound "qu" in words when they read. If you are interested, feel free to click on the link below to hear one of the songs we sang at the wedding today! Please continue to help your child notice and independently read words with qu in books that you read at home.
