Are you getting stir crazy at home? Are you running out of activities for the little ones to do? Below you will find a few ideas to keep your sweet one occupied on this Snow Day.
1. By the end of first grade, students are expected to read and write all 100 Sitton Words. Click here to access these words. Here is a list of engaging activities to help practice spelling and writing the Sitton 100.
Spelling Practice:
-Rainbow Write the words (write a word in orange, trace it in blue, trace again in purple, etc.)
-Pour paint into a small Zip-Loc bag and use a Q-tip to write words
-Use play-dough to spell words
-Paint words
-Cut letters out of magazines to create words
-Use pipe cleaners to spell words
-Use several cotton balls to form letters and words
-Put words into sentences and draw a picture to match
Reading Practice:
-Read through the list
-Make flash cards
-Write a few of the words on paper and hide them around the house. Have your child find and read them
-Make a BINGO board using words from this list
-See how many of these words your child can find in a stack of books. Cross off the ones they find
-Practice reading these words to a stuffed animal and/or sibling
2. Do Daily 5 at home! Encourage your child to show you what they do in Daily 5 and use a timer to see if they can still build their stamina to 20 minutes. Students typically choose Read to Self for 20 minutes and Work on Writing. After they independently read or write, celebrate their accomplishment! Ask them what they read in their book or read what they wrote during their writing time.
3. Make Connections. Below you will find a photo of one our learning charts at school. We are working on comprehension and understanding what we read. Have your child read to you, or you read to your child, and ask them if they can make any connections from the text to another text, to their own life, or to the world around them. At this point in first grade, our goal is not to just read, but to understand what we are reading!
