Writing workshop is one of my favorite times of the day and it is quickly becoming a favorite for the first graders too! We are currently learning about small moment stories and the importance of zooming in on one very small moment. For example, I wanted to write about something I did for the first time and then zoomed in closer to talk about my first time rollerblading and zoomed in even closer to the small moment of putting my rollerblades on for the first time.
After we learn a specific writing strategy (such as brainstorming ideas) or writing technique (zooming in, having finger spaces) the boys and girls return to their seats to write. They love being able to choose their own topic and I love watching their enthusiasm for writing grow! They write for about 15 minutes before returning to the carpet to share what they wrote.
In our classroom we have been talking about what a good writing partner looks like and sounds like. A good partner listens closely, keeps good eye contact, sits knee to knee with their partner, and asks questions. This week we met with our writing partners to share our stories. The first graders really enjoy this special time with their partners. The hard work that they do is definitely worth sharing with others!

The kiddos did a wonderful job meeting with their writing partners for the first time! I was so proud of the way they listened to one another and encouraged each other in their writing. We will continue meeting with our writing partners throughout the year and will be writing small moment stories through November. Feel free to create a special writing journal or binder at home for your child. You may even encourage them to find a unique and special place in your home to write. The more opportunities a child has to write, the better! :)
