Many of you may have heard your child talk about Daily 5. The Daily 5 is a way of structuring the reading block so every student is actively engaged in meaningful literacy tasks. The research-based tasks will greatly impact student reading and writing achievement, as well as help foster a love for reading. Once Daily 5 is in full swing, the students will have the chance to choose their literacy activity from these options: Read To Self, Work On Writing, Read To Someone, Word Work, and Listen to Reading. While students are engaged in these activities, I will be pulling groups of individual students to help meet their specific reading and writing needs.
Daily 5 is most successful when the expectations are clear and practiced often in the classroom. Currently we are working on Read To Self and practicing the expectations of Read To Self. We have been working hard at building our stamina and have now reached SIX minutes of independent reading in which each child gets started right away, stays in one spot, reads quietly, and reads the whole time. I am so proud of their hard work! Once we reach 20 minutes of independent reading, we will have a class celebration. Below you will see pictures of our Read To Self time. I hope you are as impressed with your child as I am!

Before we leave to read independently, we spend about ten minutes discussing new reading strategies. This week we talked about 3 ways to read a book. 1. Read the pictures. 2. Read the words. 3. Retell the story. One of the greatest ways for children to become better readers is to have them read! Please encourage your child to read daily at home and remind them of the 3 ways to read a book.
