During this Christmas season our class has been participating in Random Acts Of Kindness (RAKs). We are participating in RAKs to help us understand the importance of giving and thinking of others. Christmas is a very exciting time for everyone (especially first graders!). There are presents to open, trees to decorate, and goodies to eat. It is a special time of year! However, we have talked about how Christmas is much more than gifts, Christmas trees, and goodies. Christmas is a perfect time to be thinking of others before ourselves, making others feel cared and loved for, and giving rather than receiving. You have probably heard a few of our RAKs, but today the kids really felt the joy of giving!
Today, our RAK was to give hot chocolate to two of the recess moms. These moms do such a wonderful job of bearing the cold weather to make sure we are safe and are having fun out on recess. We wanted to fill their buckets today and let them know how much we care about them and appreciate them! The kids were SO excited!
At lunch recess, Mickey and Chloe were picked to carry the two cups of hot chocolate and RAK notes to two of the recess moms. Other kiddos from our class followed them to help present the gift. Wow! The recess moms were so very thankful for their thoughtfulness. At the end of the day I asked the kiddos, "How did it make you feel to give to someone else?" Their responses were very positive,"Great!" "I loved it!" "It made me feel warm inside!"
Today we learned how it felt to give to someone else and the kids REALLY enjoyed it. Way to go kiddos! You thought of others before yourself, you made someone feel cared and loved for, and you gave rather than received. What great bucket fillers! I'm so proud of each and every one of you. :)
We are continuing to talk about Christmas being a time to give to others, put others before ourselves, and to show others that we care about them. The kids have enjoyed experiencing the feeling they get when they give to others. Not only does it fill other peoples' buckets, but it fills our own as well!
To my sweet first graders, keep giving to others. I'm so proud of you!
