Last week we learned that ow and ou say "ow" like in cow and cloud. Together we created a list of words with ow and ou. Here is a list of some of the words we thought of:
Ow shower town brown plow crown tower flower down cow | Ou ouch cloud shout about mountain round sound found loud |
Now that we know that ow and ou say "ow", first graders can read these words on their own. As you read with your child at home, please encourage them to read words with ow and ou on their own. They can do it! :)
After we made a list as a class, students worked with partners to sort words with ow and ou. As they sorted their words, they also needed to read the words. I was so impressed by the learning they did and I loved seeing partners encourage each other to find chunks in the words rather than telling them what the word was.

Learning that ow and ou say "ow" has been a tricky skill for us! We spent a few days this week reviewing last week's skill and began playing "I Have Who Has" using words with ow and ou. I took a video the second time we played and I thought they did a wonderful job! Again, it's a tricky skill, and you will see some hesitation, but the more we practice, the better we will become!
