We have been working hard on building our stamina during Daily 5. Today we were thrilled to reach 16 minutes of Read to Self! We can find a spot right away, stay in one place, read quietly and not talk to friends, and read the whole time for SIXTEEN minutes! Way to go kiddos! We are only 4 minutes away from reaching our goal of 20 minutes of Read to Self. Once we reach 20 minutes, we will celebrate with a special treat and also be able to add Work on Writing to our Daily 5 time.
Before we leave the carpet to practice Read to Self, we often discuss our Beanie Reading Strategies. We now have met all 7 beanies who help us become better readers. Have you heard about our beanie friends yet? If not, meet the beanies below! Each animal provides a special "tool" for reading when a child gets stuck on a word:
*Eagle Eye: Look at the pictures
*Lips the Fish: Get your lips ready and make the beginning sound
*Stretchy Snake: Slooooowly stretch out the sounds
*Chunky Monkey: Look for chunks of sounds or letters you already know
*Flippy Dolphin: Flip the vowel sound
*Skippy the Frog: Skip over the word and hop back after you read the sentence
*Tryin' Lion: Keep trying and never give up!
Want more information on our beanie strategies? Click here for parent bookmarks. Please feel free to print these off and use them daily as you continue reading with your child.
Once we discuss a Beanie Reading Strategy (or practice our sight words and phonics), we disperse around the classroom to practice these reading strategies. Look at the first graders growing as readers:

Great job first grade friends! I love your positive attitudes and enthusiasm for reading and I can't wait to see you continue to grow as readers this school year.
A special privilege too!
Today during Daily 5, the first grades earned a special privilege! They had the opportunity to read with a reading stick! Their reading stick guides them as they point to each word as they read. Pointing to each word while reading is a basic skill in building a foundation for reading. As you read at home, I encourage you to help your child find a "reading stick." This could include a glow stick at night, a fun cupcake toothpick, a pencil tip, the handle of a spoon, etc. Enjoy reading at home now that you know more about our Beanie Strategies and special reading sticks. Thanks for your continuous support at home!
Please join me in celebrating the great reading your child is doing at school, too. I am so proud of them!
