5th grade buddies are our favorite part of the week! Every Friday afternoon, we join Ms. Zuidema's 5th grade students for a half hour. This time provides 5th grade students the opportunity to be positive role models, leaders, and teachers. This time also provides 1st graders with the chance to see what they can become, ask questions, and also teach 5th graders a few things as well!
We have been busy meeting with our 5th grade buddies over the past few weeks. Below you will find a list of the activities we participated in:
1. We created Venn Diagrams about our buddies to discover similarities and differences in one another
2. We played a roll and cover addition/subtraction math game together
3. We played a rainbow CVC (consonant vowel consonant) reading game with our buddies
4. This past week the 1st graders read books from their book boxes to their 5th grade buddies. Ms. Zuidema shared our Beanie Strategies bookmark with her 5th graders so that 5th graders could help the 1st grade friends use reading strategies when they stumbled upon a tricky word. The 5th graders did a wonderful job teaching, rather than telling. (Please do this at home as well! Encourage your child to use reading strategies when they come across a word they don't know.)
*In addition to meeting once a week, we are continuously thinking of, caring for, and supporting each other. 5th grade buddies often wave to us in the lunch room or surprise us with a new pencil in the hallway! This past week we had the special opportunity to encourage our 5th grade buddies as they take the MEAP test. In first grade, we talked about the importance of encouraging others and using kind words to build each other up. We created "posters" to hang on our buddies lockers. They turned out so well and I was so proud of the 1st graders for thinking of others! Keep up the hard work 5th graders! Only two more MEAP testing days!

Unfortunately, the iPad was unable to capture the posters with good quality, but the all of the posters turned out wonderfully! Some of the 5th graders even took them off of their lockers and taped them in their desk. The 5th graders adore their 1st grade buddies and I know the 1st graders feel the same way!
Walk-A-Thon!
Friday we participated in our Walk-A-Thon! It was a beautiful day for a 2-lap walk around our school. We enjoyed walking together as a class and then celebrated with yummy popsicles on the front lawn of the school with our 5th grade buddies. Thank you for inviting us to join you, 5th grade friends!
We can't wait to see you Friday!
